The Vermont Archaeological Society (VAS) is comprised of professional archaeologists, historians and scholars from around the state, dedicated to the stewardship of Vermont’s cultural resources. The Vermont Archaeology Society works in partnership with the Vermont Division for Historic Preservation and is supported by the Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) and the Federal Highway Administration.
Since the late 1970's, the Vermont Agency of Transportation has been dedicated to preserving historic and precontact-period archaeological work throughout the state. VTrans has made possible the study of archaeological Native American sites dating to every time period from the Paleoindian (c.9,000- 7,000 B.C.) to the time of European contact ( c. A.D. 1600) and including post-Contact period European American sites. VAS is committed to facilitating this work and to promoting public education regarding Vermont’s rich cultural heritage. To that end, we present Vermont Archaeology Month held each September.
