September 6, Saturday, 1 p.m.

Archaeologists David Lacy (U.S. Forest Service) and Victor Rolando (MHS) will lead a leisurely 2-3 mile guided hike in the Green Mountain National Forest to the abandoned village of North Winhall, which dates to the early 19th century. This small rural community existed at the junction of the Peru Turnpike (ca. 1830's-1930's) and the old road to Bondville. We will inspect the remains of houses, barns, mills, a bridge, charcoal kilns, a schoolhouse, tavern, and of course, the old turnpike.

The hike will commence at 1 p.m. sharp (come a few minutes early) at the Long Trail parking lot, on the north side of Routes 11 & 30, about 5 miles east of Manchester Center. Limited to the first 25 people. Wear hiking shoes and expect some minor bushwhacking. Bring bug and tick spray, hiking poles, drinking water, and cameras. Children must be accompanied by an adult. NO PETS, thank you. There are no sanitary facilities at the parking lot or along the trail.

Rain date (steady downpour) will be the next day, same time/place.

Location: See event description for location and place to meet. (Long Trail parking lot on the north side of Routes 11 & 30).
