Industrial archaeologist Victor Rolando will present a slide-illustrated program on charcoal making in Vermont at the Annual Meeting of the Manchester Historical Society. He will trace the uses and production techniques of charcoal from ancient times to the mid 19th century, when its production demand peaked, especially in the mountains around Manchester. Ruins of charcoal kilns and abandoned villages will be illustrated and described; as well an exhibit of charcoal making and kilns. To follow the regular annual business meeting and elections of the Manchester Historical Society.

Location: First Congregational Church, Route 7 in Manchester Village. Parking behind the church off Union Street. Enter the rear door, up one flight, turn right to the meeting room (handicap access is through the same door to the new elevator, floor 2)
