UMass at Amherst Research Professor Mitch Mulholland will give a presentation about a large Native American site discovered and interpreted as a preparation camp for a cooperative hunt. Oriented to a small brook in the Otter Creek drainage, the site was occupied during the Middle to Late Woodland periods. Despite challenges from clay soils and a consistently high water table, several subtle hearth features were identified that yielded paleo-botanical remains, and charcoal for radiocarbon dates. The site yielded a large number of quartzite Levanna points, and also contained a small Meadowood component.
