The Paleoindians at the Margin: Recent Research into Vermont's Earliest Inhabitants, the Champlain Sea and Early Environments in the Far Northeastern Region
September 2, Tuesday, 7 p.m.
Jess Robinson will present ongoing research on several Vermont paleoindian sites, including the Reagan site, located in East Highgate, Vermont. The Reagan site rose to early prominence in paleoindian research when it was reported to the scholarly and popular presses in the early 1950's. In the decades following that important discovery, few additional paleoindian sites were identified in Vermont, even though important discoveries were being made in other northeastern states. Since the early 1990's the situation has changed dramatically. Several important paleoindian sites have been studied by the UVM Consulting Archaeology Program and others. Moreover, new environmental and geological studies place most or all of these occupations at a time coeval with the Champlain Sea. This presentation will highlight studies of these paleoindian sites and evaluate how these sites potentially relate to the Champlain Sea. Jess Robinson is a research supervisor at the University of Vermont Consulting Archaeology Program and a second-year graduate student at the University of Albany-SUNY.
